Adam Savage answers a question about RFID Censorship after his talk on his Fascination with the Dodo Bird at the Last HOPE Hacker Conference (www.HOPE.net) which took place on July, 18-20 2008 at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. — Mythbusters Host Retracts RFID Censorship - Mythbusters host Adam Savage is retracting comments he made at a hackers conference where he said an episode exposing security flaws in credit card RFID technology was squelched by credit card company lawyers. In a new statement Adam says, ” If I went into the detail of exactly why this story didn’t get filmed, it’s so bizarre and convoluted that no one would believe me, but suffice to say…the decision not to continue on with the RFID story was made by our production company, Beyond Productions, and had nothing to do with Discovery, or their ad sales department.” — Steven Levy gave the keynote address. Kevin Mitnick, Steve Rambam, Jello Biafra, and Adam Savage of MythBusters were also featured speakers at The Last HOPE Hackers Conference. Everything digital is hackable. A computer is incapable of generating randomness, if you think you can come up with an algorithm which does then you will be rich. This is perfect for companies like Texas inst, because they get to release a better version for a higher price which is just as hackable. Quantum computing might change this as data can be arranged so it is uncopiable. Once downloaded, it is gone. Stealing qbits of info is like stealing a RL object, someone is going to notice.

I wholeheartedly disagree with you. The fact that these are so insecure IS the reason why EVERYONE should be told how hackable they are. I would also be interested to hear what things “depend” on RFID. Everything RFID is being used for, worked perfectly fine when they didn’t have it. RFID makes certain things “easier” and that is all. It is a grave misconception that anything depends on this dangerous technology and that misconception is used to justify the censorship of the facts
